GRIFFINS

ARRIVALS FROM

THE NORTH

SOME LIKELY LOOKING PONIES

(By "Captain Foster")

New Derby griffins con- tinue to arrive from the North, and Mr. Pearce has a nice looking Grey stal- lion.

Mr. Ho Kom-tong's string has been enlarged by a shapely hay, named Albert Hall, and a most; attractive looking iron

grey mare called Victoria Hall! Rumour has it that these two panies are of the highest class. I also learn that the mare is only rising five years of age and it is possible that she may not make her debut until the Annual Meeting of 1935.

Mr. Samsun's batch griffins have also arrived-I was much

the blood-like appearance of a gray mare and a dark brown mare, the two prefer the former, but they both look high class racing animals.

Of Events Alexandra Hall And Royal Flush Not Competing.

(By "Captain Foster")

A very attractive programme has

been compiled for the meeting which will be held on Sunday next, and we should see good racing. The meeting opens with

I expect to see a close finish between Prestwick and Pure Muste, The intter I think will get the verdict and So On should fill the third position. Likely finish:

LAST MEETING

FIRST FAVOURITES. DISAPPOINT

VALOROUS LITTLE UNLUCKY

and

(By "Captain Foster") My first favourites disappointed me sa only Liberty Bay and Iron Groy were returned winnera, but the greatest disappointment of all was that my three selected animals for the Glasgow Handicap "B" Class ran unplaced. I did, how- ever, mention, that Don, Valorous and The Tiger (the eventual win- nor and pinced ponies respectively) would show up prominently.

The race was undoubtedly the best of the afternoon and think that, as the ruce was run, Valorous was unlucky to lose through getting off badly at the

slari,

He must have lost close an to half a dozen lengths when the barrier flew up and was fast over- hauling Don at the finish.

Not Altogether Unexpected

Liberty Bay broke the one and half miles record in a 'common canter in the St. Andrew's Stakes and the time is yet far distant before his colours can be lowered.

King Salmon ran a good pony in the Comrie Handicap, B Division but apparently it was just beyond him to concede 20 lbs. to Fi Fa. In my notes, Inst week I and that he was capable of springing a sur- prise, and his win therefore was But altogether unexpected.

Tillicum's win was no surprise ns I mentioned last week that he would surely give a good account of himself by being near at the Anish.

Frankly, I did not expect Lucy Glitters to win the Cogee Handi- cap. She won, however, most con- vincingly and the win was most popular.

Weight with the Australians has been a source of interest to me and I think we all now agree that they have shown us that they are not, strictly speaking, weight carriers.

SUBSCRIPTIONS GRIFFINS FOR THE NEW SEASON

SEVENTY FOUR ANIMAL S HAVE NOW BEEN NAMED BY THEIR OWNERS

(By "Captain Foster")

The list of subscription griffins for next season is much larger com- pared with last year's. There are, in all, 75 animals, all named, as will be seen from the list detailed below. The only exception is that of pony: No. 124, the property of Mr. Hosie who is at present on furlough.

racing career this Autumn, and im- mediately shewed us that he was a rider of note. He did not hayo the best of mounts but he was always "good enough" to win if

his mounts wore also equal to the ocenaton. Ile auccesBEN were chlelly for the "Mayor of Talpo."

We can afford, to lose a rider of his calibre, and all I can say is whnt Is Hongkong's loss is Tientsin's gain, and f take this opportunity of wishing him the best of luck in the port where he has already scored in- numerable victories int the saddle and where he has been a raost popular figure amongst the racing finternity.

King's Parnde was hard put to it to win the Compie Handicap, A. | Division and Partnership ran a D. game pony to finish so close up as he did not have what one might: term a smooth passage during the race.

Mr. Donald Black made a wel- come appearance in the Inverness Handicap and finished second on Jingle.

PONY WHICH WON CHATER CUP

Champagne Bay, the popular local racing pony, which carried off the Chater Cup and the Old Course Plate at the annual meeting last year, was destroy- ed this morning.

The pony, which was originally owned by Mr. Dunbar and subse- quently by Messre. Dunbar and Roidy, was considered to be too old for further racing.

A 1931 griffin, the bay had quite

a successful career, during which it earned $5,125 for its owners, including $2,550 prior to the be- ginning of 1933,

Originally an "A" Class pony, it was promoted to "B" Class, and met with successes at the last annual meeting, when Mr. Hill, : the Shanghai jockey, twice steer- ed it to victory.

Subsequent to the annual meet- ing the pony made only two ap. pearance on the track, whon' it earned places. Champagne Bny did not raco after March 18 of this year.

He went to the post an odds-on favorita, but the best Winooka, Australian sprinta champion, could do in the featured Challenger Puram nt-Laurs!, Md., was to dulah fast in a field of Bre.
