Getting into the right contract | often requires tactful manoeuvr÷- ing of the bidding. A most unusually intercating hand both from the standpoint of tactful bidding and good playing is one recently played by Samuel. D. Ostraw of Erio, Pa.
. Mr. Ostrow sat in the South and passed, as did West, North open- ed with one club, and East pas el.
South held two five-card suits. However, the spade suit is so wenk that the better response is a forcing one over one bld of one diamond. West overcnlled with a heart, North went to one П10 trump.

While South might have orig- inally felt that his partnor's bid of one club, being a third-hand bid, was rather weak, the overcall of one no trump over West's bld now showed that North had really fine hand. When Enst- passell, Mr. Ostrow in the South showed his second suit, trying to And a fit, as he realized that the hand should not play at no trump, Therefore he bld two spades.
West passed and North jumped to four spades. West made a bad double, as he was sure to disclose the location of valuable high cards to the declarer.
The Play
The play of the hand was an- usually interesting. West opened the king of hearts which Mr. Ostrow in the South won with the ace.
In order to prevent ruffing. by his opponents he immediately deuce, played trump. On his West played the nine, the ten was finessed and. East won the trick with the jack.
East returned his partner's suit which South trumped with the three of spades. Another trump

Mr. Ostrow trumped with; the seven of spades and then swung his 'queen of diamonds. When West trumped with, tho queen of spades, Mr. Ostrow | trumped in dummy with the king! of spade and won the last trick In dummy with the nine of clubs, If East had refused to cover the ion of cluba with the queen, the contract would have been de- feated.
