BRILLIANCE OF COMDR. SHAW

Cambridge beat Oxford by 176 runs at the H.K.C.C, yesterday,

Batting At all times with ensy confidence and skill, and occasionally administering very Hovere punishment to the attack, Llout. Comdr. R. J. Shaw, enjoyed n personal triumph in the defeat. of Oxford by Cambridge in the annual cricket match on the Hong- kong Cricket ground yesterday.

He hit up a magnificent 158 and remained undefeated, when the faninge was declared at 261 for 4 The forcefulness of his batting can be judged from the fact that he gathered five sixes and 23 four-122 in boundary hits,

runa.

He received valuable support from Lieut. Comdr. J. D. Southorn who was unbeaten with 51 to his credit. The Oxford attack lacked sting, and only Grinths could keep the batsmen qulet, although he was | eventually treated with acant respect, his two wickets coating 58!

Professor L. T. Ride came in for most punishment, nine overs yielding 75 runs. And there was no wicket secured as consolation, The collapse of Oxford at the wicket was even more amazing than their unsuccessful efforts In the field. C.B.R. Sargent did what he liked and ran through the side to take 6 for 46 and to help dis- miss Oxford for a paltry 85 runs.

G. R. Sayer (25), L. B. Holmes (16) and R. H. Griffiths (10) were the only batamen to display any 'sort of confidence and ability.

Shaw followed up his brilliant batting by equally fine wicket keeping. He slumped Hlmx. worth, Evans and Picker in succession, and did not allow a single extra.
