ITALIAN SCRAPPERS CLAIM STEAMER NINCHOW
Italian scrappers have bought the China Mutual steamer Ningchow,' which has been laid up in the Garo- lock since May last, so that the policy of the Blue Funnel fleet of woeding out their older units is bo- ing continued.
She was a sister to the Keomun and Oanfa, and the three ships mark- od a very great stop in the China Mutual flest, being twin-scrow steam- ers of rather more than 7,000 tons~: afterwards. Increased to nearly 9,000: --with a speed of 14 knots that was casily exceeded and a deadweight capacity of 12,000.
Under Captain J. Riley she was put on to the Far Eastern trade as soon as she was completed, but a good deal of her subsequent pro-war Acrvice was on the Blue Funnel North Pacific service by way of Japan.
Her speed was 'exceedingly useful to her in March, 1918, when a Ger- man submarine, chased her for some time without being able to come within effective range. Captain H. L. Allen was in command at the time and get full credit for the way ho handled his ship, as he did again a few months later when he picked up
boatload of survivors of the tor pedoed Persia. Although she was in the danger zone, Captain Allen han- dled his ship magnificently, bringing her alongside the wreckage which was giving the survivors refuge and rescuing every one.

Taken up by the Shipping Con- troller, like all sizeable ships towarda the end of the war, she was employ- ed in connexion with the British operations round Vladivostock noon after the Armistice, and then turned to her Eastern service, In 1930 she was laid up in the Garbloch for a spell, but was recommissioned for the Far Eastern run until May last, and has proved a really excel lent ship during her long life.

Mr. Cave has appeared exten- sively in America and at Home, and in the former centre is known as the second Al Jolson. During 4 competition in Los Angeles ho ran accond to the famous black-faced comedian, whose name became n household word with the introduc- tion of the talking pictures.
The management of the Hong- kong Hotel have been 40 struck with the originality and excellence of Mr. Cave's "act" that they have decided to extend his contract to embrace, not only Saturday night's entertainment, but future tea dunces. At a special rehearsal yesterday, Mr. Cave was the subject of most favourable comment from assembled critics.
The famous Joy Fun Toy. Com- pany of Chinese entertainers, whose marvellous acta proved no sensationally successful at the King's Theatre recently, have also been engaged for Saturday nights gala re-opening of the Roof Garden at the Hongkong Hotel.
Dance music will be supplied by the new Hongkong dance band, "The Revellers", and special dance music will, in addition, be supplied by Jee Futera and his orchestra, which will play all the waltzes.
Altogether, the evening promisen
to be one of the social 6vents of the forthcoming senson in Hong- kong.
CORONER'S INQUEST.
DIVER'S UNTOWARD DEATH IN HARBOUR
The Coroner's inquest into the death of William Ramsay Stevens, who was hauled, lifeless, from the harbour on September 20, continued before Mr. Schofield yesterday.

Stevens was employed as 九 diver by the Public Works Depart- ment and was working on the har- bour bed near Blake Pier when his death occurred.
Evidence was given yesterday by Chan Sui and To Kan, fokles working the pump, and Mr. An- drew Nicol, of the Port develop- ment sub-department.
Questioned by the Bench, Mr. Nicol and the surface men were not given any instructions. This was usually left to the diver. in charge of the gang. Witness did not think there was any necessity for drill nor instructions in frat ald. Accidents were extremely rare, and he had nover, in all his experience, known of a diver who wanted frst aid when brought to the surface.
Answering further questions, witness said in hle opinion the deceased had been desperate and Idid not know what he was doing when he pulled the helmet from his hond What causes led to this dosperation he did not know.
Tho Inquest was further ad- journed, until Wednesday.
