THE TYPHOON ·
GALE RAGES THROUGH THE NIGHT
EMPRESS'S SHAVE
THE GALE WHICH RAGED over the Colony last night was a mere side-kick of the typhoon, which passed well to the South and is now threatening Hoihow with a very severe "blow."
In the afternoon, it seemed that the heavy winds were dying away, but shortly after eight o'clock, the gusts began to strengthen and for several hours aftery wards the gale raged, varying in violence from hour to hour.
Several fierce squalls were experienced, a wind of 67 miles an hour velocity being registered at the Royal Observatory. The barometer remained fairly steady during the whole period of the storm, which was ac- companied by heavy rains, and did not begin to rise until about three o'clock this morning.
