The Bidding

South opened the bidding with one heart. West over-called with two clubs, North passed and East hid three diamonds, which is one more than necessary. This is a forcing bid and requires, the bidd- ing to be kept open until game is arrived at. South passes and West hids four clubs, which Enst carries to five.

The Play

North had the opening lead and led the ten of hearts, the top of his partner's suit, which East, the dummy, won with the ace, South putting on the seven-spol. 'The nine of hearts is returned from dummy, Smith playing the jack, declarer the four and North the aix. South has a bad hand to lead away from, s odecides to lead trump. He leads the six of trump, which the declarer allows to ride to dummy's jack.

It is easy for West to read South's hand. In order to have au original bid he is practically mark- ed with the four kings, and the queen of hearts. Declarer's next play is the ace of diamonds from dummy and then the queen. When South refuses to cover and plays the nine, the declarer discards the five of spades. A small diamond is then led from dummy, South playa the king and declarer trumpa with the five of clubs and then leads the eight of hearts. North's best defence is to discard the ten of diamonds. The dummy trumps with the deuce of clubs. The de-. clarer must not return the diamond or he will establish a trump trick | for North. The proper lead is the queen of clubs from dummy. South plays the king and declarer wins. the trick with the ace. Declarer then leads his ten of clubs, picking up the nine from the North hand, the eight of diamonde is discarded from dummy and South discards the four of spades.

West has a good reading on the South hand: king-queen of hearta and the king and one other spade. Declaror therefore awings his last trump, the cight of clubs, North drops the deuce of spades, the three of spades is played from dummy and South is force to play the queen of hearts.
