"DISHONOURED."

FINE FILM SHOWING

AT THE KING'S.

TELEGRAPH. SATURDAY, AUGUST 1, 1931.

When Paramount first presented Murlone Daitrich to the screen through the meatum of "Morocco," the critics enthusiastically ac- claimed her as the "New Greta Garbo," which may or may not be compliment, according to one's

But in "Dis way of thinking. honoured," which the King's Theatre offer, to its patrons to- day, she is just Marlene Deitrich, a distinct personality, and a bril- liant success.

There is something indefinably appealing and truly artistle about this Marlene, who, one ta led tʊ

believe, through lave of her coun- try, turns spe, and as X-27, 18 one of the most astonishing figures in the trouble between Austria and Russia in 1915. Marlene Deitrich has the physical beauty and an intelligent knowledge of men and human emotions to adapt that beauty and character as a mensis of attaining

ting her ends., The cynles will probably sneer at her deraiso, when, brease of love, she forfeita her life at the hands of the coun- try for which she had worked so courageously, but it is in keeping with the character Marlene sets out to depict from the Arst, and she dies as magnificently as she lived.

In addition to being a political apy. Marlone reveals herself as a musteinn, or rather, as she herself | says. "I understand music." The director makes the most of thin, and he deserves the thanks of the public.

Through the medium of the piano, Marlene expresses her moods and emotions. She tells a man of his impending death, she tells of her love for country, and Inter for a man, and he even com- puses a code message for her mini tary employers by menus of the plano, because the "understands" music.

There is also a cat "starring" with Marlone In this picture. In fact it is doubtful if the beautiful actress would have been quite so appealing if she were without the hack cat who remains with her. solemn, but full of understanding and sympahy until the end.

[1

Of course, Miss Deitrich is for- tunate in carrying with her such

fing

supporting cast as that which appears in "Dishonoured." Victor Melaglen plays opposite and gives some of his high stand- ard work as the lieutenant who meets Marlene in a battle of wits and records two wins to her one. Warner Orland is also present with some thoughtful, restrained acting, and altogether there is little to carp at respecting the histrionic and elocutionary abili- ties of the players.

The technical side of the film is treated in that manner which one now naturally looks for in Para- mount productions. The photo-

graphic effects are remarkable, and at times brilliant both in idea and execution. There appear to be the minimum number of mix- takes and the maximum amount of thoroughly good, sound fáchni.

At a special Press pre-view given this week, the impression left was that Hongkong will be delighted with this film which is eo artistic yet so powerful in its drama and romance.
