PUBLIC SCHOOLS
AND NATION.
DUTY TO PRODUCE AN ARISTOCRACY.
JOHN BUCHAN'S HOPE. |
Cambridge, June 19.
Mr. John Buchan, M.P., was the guest of honour to-day at the Speech Day celebrations at Leyal School at Cambridgo.
After distributing the prizes, he said in his address to the boys that they were fortunate in their terres, trial situation. being under the shadow of an ancient University. The School hnd produced eminent scholars, statesmen and leaders of business, and another most formid- able type of prominence attained by the School was in that greatest of all games, Rugby football.
It had been anid that the glory of our public Hohenla was that they produced English gentlemen. He would go father and say that it wna their duty to produce #11 Aria- tocracy.
Character and Brains.
"My definition of an aristocrat is a man who given to this world more! than he takes from it," he said, "a man who is willing to run risks in the work, both of thought and off action.
"We in England have nlways prided ourselves on our character and regard it as a peculiar national Janssension. We are inclined to n mit we may not be so clever certain foreign people, but
46 if it comes to a crisis we consider that our character will help
to muddle through. I believe that to be utterly false. No nation or man ever muddled through anything. "Our problems can nevõr solved by hranest stupidity or by quick-witted people with nothing rise but their wits. Honesty and character are the greatest things in the world, but the combination of bralus is necessary if we are to lend to B
a better world."
Sir Josiah Stamp had said that) they could pay their debi to the past only by putting the future in debt to themselves, and this re- mark. sald Mr. Buchan, containe all the law and the proplicts.
Lord Marshall, chairman of the Governors, who presided, said to the boys: "If you wish to make! Fame and fortune, you must be prepared to use your braius rather than wait for a winning leket in
sweepstake."
"Half-Pint" a juvenile dellaquen appeared in Washington court recently and was sentenced to ten days for biting a postman.

Avoid This Pitfall
men underestimate the ne- cessity of Life Insurance through
a belief that they can't afford it, or be- cause of an exaggerated feeling of prosperity. Yet most estates often disclose vanished assets and reveal- too late that a little foresight could have secured financial protection for dependents,
