PRIZES FOR EFFORT ON THE

After the 5.10 show at the King's Theatre yesterday, the Hon. Mr. 8. W. Teo distributed the prizes won in the

I have great pleasure in presiding here to-day over the distribution of prizes for the essay competition on Tom Sawyer a picture, Bofero I proceed to distribute those prizes I would like to mention that the re- sponse' our invitation to this com- petition from the local institutions has been very gratifying. Fifty-two essays were submitted, and the ad- judicatore stato there was very little plagiarism, scant evidence of copying, and with few exceptions the grammar and punctuation were good, although fow lost marks owing the lack of neatness. Four cesays were ruled out as they were typo-written, which, of course, is against the usual rule for original essays.

I feel sure that it will be generally agreed that opportunities such as are offered by these competitions should be takom advantage of the young people, especially students. It encourages their talent in this direction as it not only gives them greater confidence in, their own abilities but helps them slao to take a wider view of mattera generally.

I thank you on behalf of the King's Theatre for your keen interent in the distribution of the prizes which I shall new proceed with,
