case,
The proceedings concerned three men who are wanted by the Can- ton authorities for the alleged murder of a clansman in their native lage of Taifu. A party of five mon recently went up-coun- try to take photographs of the scene of the crime, and while there they were interfered with, It is stated, by the Chinese soldiery, and detained.
Subsequently, all five men were released, with the exception of Tam Kwai, regarded as an important witness for the defence in the ex- tradition case, who is still a pri- soner in a guol at Fatshan.
Alleged to Be a Bandit. Regarding him, it was yesterday stated by the Public Prosecutor (Mr. Somerset Fitzroy), that a communication had been received. through H. M. Consulate at Canton from the Governor of Kwangtung to the effect that the man was being detained on separate charge, of conspiring with bandits, As the charge was a serious one, It was not possible to send Tam Kwai back to Hongkong.
Mr. Hin-shing Lo, Counsel re- presenting the fugitives in the ex- tradition case, who had all along protested strongly against the de- tention of his most important wit- ness, suggested that the real reason for Tam Kwai net being returned here was that he had been tortured and was not in a condition to be presented before the Court.
A photographer, who had accom- panied Tam Kwal on the expedition, which was to have resulted in the acquisition of photographic evi- dence of much value from the de- ferce point of view, yesterday - counted his experience commencing from the departure from Canton.
He stated that when they reach ed Taifu Village, Tam Kwai did not accompany the party into the place, but stayed behind when they reach ed the village gateway, after giv- ing directions to witness as to the shops to be photographed.
Witness's Experience. Witness and a foki had just be- gun to focus their cameras when they were interrupted by village scouts who requested them to pro- ceed to headquarters. There they were kept for an hour before be- ing finally lodged 'in a sub-magis- tracy of the Fatshan district.
"Thero I was detained for five days and five nights. Chains were put on my feet while I was kept in a cell. A judicial officer who came to interview me said that I was ac- cused of taking photographs for bad characters, but assured me that all would be right with me and that I would be released as soon as my employer sent for me."
What happened to the others of the party and to Tam Kwai witness did not know, but he declared that it was the usual practice for pri- soners to be kept in their cells chained by the feet.
The case was again adjourned until Thursday.
Damaged packages must be left in the Godowns for examination by the Consignce's and the Co.'s representa- tives on any Tuesdays and Fridays, at 280 p.m. within the free storage period.
All claims must be presented within ten days of the steamer's arrival bere, after which date they cannot be re- cognized.

Because of the distance from the Aberdeen market the residents at Shou Shan Chuen Village suffer con- siderable inconvenience and with a view to providing better com- munications for the residents in this village, which is to be ex- tended by the
