CLAUDETTE COLBERT ON- HOLIDAY,
Amongst the passengers in the Javanese Prince, which arrived and left yesterday, were Mr. and Mrs. Norman Foster.
This might not convey much to the uninitiated, but Mrs. Foster ja Claudette Colbert-charming, beautiful, captivating Claudette.
Hongkongites may see her soon in the latest talkie of the incom- parable Maurice Chevalier, in which she is co-starred, "The Big Pond." Her first success, "The Lady Lies," has recently been showing in Shanghai.
Miss Colbert is French, but she conveys the impression when one talks with her that she is a very cultivated Englishwoman. She has made "The Big Pond" in both languages.
She was born in Paris, but since 1913 has lived in New York, where on Broadway she has many stage triumphs to her credit. That of the young French girl in "The Kiss in the Taxi", which ran for a year on Broadway, the lead in "The Ghost Train", "Tin Pan- Alley" (recently played as a tal- kie under the title of "New York Nights" by Norma Talmadge). Eugene O'Nell's "Dynamo", and lately a highly successful season in "Sco Naples and Dia".
Her first talkie was with Para- mount, "The Hole in the Wall", but the "fans" and critics were un- animous in their praise of her work with Walter Huston in "The Lady Lies" Walter Huston, by the by, has been chosen from many applicants for the role of Abraham Lincoln in the epoch- making film now being directed by D. W. Griffith."
Miss Colbert was "starred" in London in "The Barker", where her husband played "opposite". They have recently enacted their first talkie together "Young Men of Manhattan", and her last is "Manslaughter.*
At the Paramount Studio they are convinced that Claudette Col- bert is destined to be one of the outstanding figures on the audible screen. She combines. rare drama- tic ability with unusual beauty and a thorough knowledge of the tech- nique of acting.
They have kept her very hard at work, and she took this oppor- tunity of a vacation to "do" the world in slow stages. She stayed in Shanghai two weeks, and stated that she wished she had stayed here instead. She "did" Hong- kong with a vengeance. The ship had hardly dropped anchor when she was away. She loved the swimming at Repulse Bay, and its beautiful Hotel. She motored, she explored, she was keen about everything, and Hongkong weather behaved in its best manner, till the ship was due to leave.
