A portion of the annual report of the University for 1929, just to The Steamship, hand, deals with the Salaries Com- mittee report and states that the Council and Court of the Univer alty have adopted it and decided to give it effect as soon as possible. In accepting the obligation, the Court recorded a resolution that as the financial resources of the University are unable to bear the burden of the additional expendi- ture, an urgent recommendation be made to Government to increase its annual subvention from $50,000 to $250,000...
The University report states: The Committee unanimously and unhesitatingly condemned the existing salary scales as inade- quate. The Report takes, for example, the actual case of a pro- fessor newly arrived in the Colony who is married, has two children and finds that there is no house in the University compound avail- able for him. For purposes of calculating, the dollar is taken at 2/- so that, in respect of his salary of £800 a year, the professor re- ceives $8,000 from which must be deducted his contribution to the Superannuation Fund at the rate of 6%. This will leave him $7,600 a year or about $630 a month. I | The Professor is entitled to a free house, but if one is not available
