GERMAN THROWN INTO GAOL.
A RECENT FOOCHOW
INCIDENT.
BOUND IN ROPES AND LED THROUGH STREETS,
RELEASED ON PAROLE.
Shanghai, May 1. News has been received here of the experiences suffered by a German resident of Foochow, who was thrown into a Chinese prison as the sequel to an at- tempted deal in arms by the authorities with the man's pre- decessor.
Giving the facts of the case, the Foochow correspondent of the N. G. Daily News says:--Some live years ago a German (who had)
been well known in this port for many years) accepted a contract from the Chinese Government to
Import for them arms and am- munition. Evidently a large pro- portion of the money must have been paid over at once-for, to our surprise (not then knowing anything of his contract of arms, etc.) he suddenly decided to send his English wife and three children home to Germany on the Fuldn.

outcome of their contract with the head of the firm No goods had come through, and no word been heard of returning their money if it was not possible to complete the deal.
Endless inquiries were made of the young man left in charge, but
he was entirely ignorant of all his head had been planning. Most in- nocently he agreed to make out in German the cables which the Chin. ese officiala wanted being un- known to them. Repeatedly he was asked to go into the City to Ree these officials.

Yes, I think so too, because Dr. Dovey is a technical man and tnight have been able to say if the teeth had come from the gap in the old man's mouth. As it is, we don't know.

CHINESE YOUTH LET OFF AT KOWLOON.
Owing to there being insufficient evidence to show felonious intent, a young Chinese who was charged be- fore Mr. Whyte Smith, at the Kow- loon Magistracy this morning, with being found in the Kwong Tak Cheong Shipyard with intent to commit a felony, was acquitted by his Worship..
It was stated, that the defendant and another were seen climbing over the wall of the shipyard and were chased by an Indian constable, who, on alighting on the other side of the wall, found the defendant hiding behind a rock. The nccused ran away and waded into the water. but was chased and caught.
His Worship intimated that the prosecution had to prove intent to commit a felony and remarked that he did not think climbing over a wall to steal some brass was

His Worship was informed that. the shipyard was in the hands of the liquidators and there was only one watchman guarding the pre- mises.
