CAR PARK NEXT TO ABBEY RUINS.
BIG DEVELOPMENT PLAN AT GLASTONBURY,
A motor park for cars and coaches, a garage, and a restau- rant in the "holyest erthe of Eng- land," within the ancient abbey walls of Glastonbury, ahutting on the grounds and close to St. Joseph's Chapel itself.
That is the development which is to to take place next to the site of Joseph of Airmathen's Wattle Chapel.
The ground, which is now being levelled preparatory to building, was formerly the orchard of a house named Dunstan's.
"When it was put up for sale. on the death of the owner some time ago," said Mr. A. R. Powy, secretary of the National Trust,
which owns land adjoining the ab- bey, "the Abbey Trustees had an opportunity to buy at a certain figure. But they waited, thinking, I believe, that the sellers would reduce the price.
"But someone else stepped in and bought the land for a car park. The park will undoubtedly be close to the chapel and will disturb the quiet."

"The objection is that 'neisy and vulgar' people will alight from motorcoaches near to the Abbey. But the people who visit places like the Abbey are not noisy and not vulgar. Why, then, should they not be encouraged by a car park built by private enterprise? People are very largely inclined to welcome it."

This in spite of the fact that a lifeboat made a splendid night dash of 100 miles, but arrived too late. Several fishing boats hurried to the rescue, only to stand help- lessly by, and a seaplane started from Plymouth to assist.
The seaplane encountered bad weather and was delayed, but in any case he would have arrived too late, and her instructions were cancelled when it was learned that the tragedy was ended.
The Aberdeen trawler, Ben Doran (155 tons), became stranded on the dreaded Skerries, a trea- cherous reef of rocks west of the islands.
For two days seven men clung to the rigging on the vessel's fore- mast-during heavy snow, sleet showers and a south-westerly gale.
When it was first reported that a vessel was aground on the Skerries with men in the rigging, a life- saving crew, with apparatus, left Lerwick Immediately, and, at 2 a.m. boarded an Aberdeen trawler at Ileylor, 17 miles from the wreck. This trawler and a haddock boat, manned by local fishermen, which left another port, reached the Skerries later.
All efforts to render assistance, however, were in vain. The boats could not approach within 500 or 600 yards of the rocks owing to the terrific seas.
The men could be seen clinging to the rigging in the teeth of the gale and the heavy snow squalls.
A lifeboat was summoned from Stromness (Orkney) and made a splendid dash to the scene and nine trawlers and drifters-left the mainland.
These returned, however, with the news that the Ben Doran had broken up and disappeared, only the gallows being visible.

In mutton and lamb the United
Kingdom provided herself with 50 per cent. of her requirements, and. New Zealand provided half the remainder. The Empire's supply of pigs, however, was wholly in- adequate.
As regards dairy products, the Empire was deficient in butter, cheese and condensed and preser- ved milk.
The Empire was now more than self-supporting in regard to wheat.
