WIFE" OF GOVERNOR
AS BURGLAR.
ROBBERIES STAGED AT OWN HOUSE.
A dramatic confession by the wife of Dr. Momm, Governor of the Potsdam district, has led to his resignation.
. After cross-examination by Berlin detectives she confessed that burglaries which had re- cently taken place at her house were' committed by herself.
In 1927 Frau Momm informed the insurance company that house- hold linen had been stolen from the official residence, and obtain- ed nearly £10 as compensation.
In June last she again reported to the insurance company that other articles had been stolen, and received 126.
Last December the worran formed the insurance company that valuable, silver ornaments, candlesticks," &c., had been stolen. from her house and received £235,

On March 10 Frau Mamm re ported a fresh robbery. but her story was so strange that sus- picion was aroused.
She declared that she had taken
a strong sleeping draught owing to her shattered nerves, but had nevertheless been' awakened in the middle of the night by a noise,
She was startled to see D masked face framed where a panel of her bedroom door had been taken out.
She discovered, she said, that) £100, belonging to a charitable fund, had disappeared.
The police found that 30-holes had been bored round the sides! of the door panel, which had then been sawn out. They calculated that the operation must have oc- cupied at least an hour and half, und must have made a con- siderable noise.

Later, Berlin detectives found the greater part of the valuable silver buried in the cellar of Dr. Moman's official residence, and discovered that the rest had been bought by dealers.
Dr. Momm was informed, and spoke to his wife, who made a full confession.
Frau Momm, who is known as a fanatically religious woman,faint- ed when she finished her confus- sion.
Dr. Momin returned to the in- money surance company all the paid to his wife and has handed in his resignation to the Govern ment.
His position corresponds almost to that of a Lord-Lieutenant of
an English county, though more actual power attaches to it.
It has not yet been decided if any action will be taken against Frau Momm.
MOTORING ADMIRAL
"I HAD TO GO HARD TO STARBOARD"
A motoring Admiral caused some amusement by giving his evi dence in nautical terms at Mort- lake, S.W., when Mrs. Kathleen Maxwell, of Upper Richmond- road. Putney, S.W., was summon- ed for driving a motor-car dan- gerously.
A constable said that Mrs. Metaxa pulled out from behind a stationary line of traffic.
Admiral. James, who was wear- ing plus fours, said he was just getting under way when to his amazement Mrs. Metaxa pulled across him from astern. He had to go hard to starboard to avoid a smash. He mounted the pave- ment and his bows rested in tho porchway of a public-house,
Mrs. Metaxa said she had land- ed in England 24 hours before the alleged offence. She had driven 700 miles in two days on the Can- tinent, where the traffic used the right of the road, and she made a momentary mistake.A
Mrs. Metaxa was fined £5 and Sir William gave notice of appeal on behalf of his daughter
