MR, NOISE ON ITS PLACE

IN MODERN LIFE..

An interesting lecture on "Art: Its Place in Modern Life" was delivered by Mr. William Nolse before the Faculty of Arts Asso- ciation in the Assembly Room last night Art, Mr. Noise said, is a fascinating subject. There few subjects around which is centred so much controversy, upon which such widely differing ideas are held and taught by its leaders and teachers. A com- parison of the conception of art is it is expressed in the works of such artists as Epstein. Nichol- son, Sickert, Fry, and Nash name at random a few representa- tives of the advanced Modernist school, with that expressed in the works of representative artists of the traditional or academical school as Knight, Sargent, Dicksee and Collier shows how utterly opposed they are and how difficult it is to reconcile such conflicting ideas upon the same subject There are many other breakaways from the Traditional or Academi- cal school of thought, the more influential and better known being impressionism, Post-Impres- sionism, Vorticism and Cubism.

The place of Art in modern life is certainly most important one and worthy of more considera- tion than is generally given to it. Mr. Noise asked if there is

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9, 1930.

Then the great Michael Angelo, artist and sculptor, bringing Art to its perfection as we have it in the Traditional school of modern times. Raphael, the youngest of them all, came when Art had reached its zenith. He had no new ground ta break, no new ideas to spread; he had to maintain the standard already reached, which he did so splendidly.

The whole story of Art of this period shows how inseparably Art was bound up with the life of the people, for it was confined almost entirely to religion, portraiture, and to the telling of stories.

A Revolutionary Painter. Coming nearer to our own time I think we may say that the period which saw the French revolution saw also a great change in Art.

"David" the revolutionary paint-i er, who was at that time dominat- ing French Art, was virtually a dictator of Art schools and teach- ing. He destroyed at any rate in France the traditions of paint- ing so thoroughly, that the next generation found themselves, with- out any traditions at all. They had not only to work for a new public who did not understand or care for Art, but they had to create an Art, with which they endeavoured to interest their new patrons. That was the begin nings of the unrest and division between public and artist, and the breach has widened very con- siderably since, for from France have emanated nearly all the new theories and isms around which so much controversy centres, and so we come to our own times when we find Artists and Public still at variance. The domestic arts, such as Furniture making, Wood carv ing, Pottery, Wrought Iron work, etc, produced by craftsmen were artists in their business, fill-

It is the personal expression of each individual whose work re- flects the life of the times, as each interprets it, for Art is the reflection of life itself.

CLEANLINESS,

No. 3

With every type of cooking appliance à certain amount of grease is produced when fatty foods-especially meats are cooked. The beat method of dealing with this grease is to wipe it off with soft paper, while it is still warm, before it has solidified, and especially before the cooker is used again.

With a gas cooker there is a complete absence of ..dust, smoke and soot; the cooking is carried on under the most cleanly conditions. The all-enamel Gas Cooker is the aeme of cleanliness:

There is striking testimony to the cleanliness of gas in the fact that the Demonstration Kitchen at the Institute of Hygiene (London) is equipped with gas cooking appliances.

May we fix you a modern Gas Cooker on, hire-purchase terras? You may name your own instalments if desired. Cookers also fixed on hire at $1.00 a month and sold for cash.

Rhythm, colour, design, balance, vision are some of the attributes necessary in works of Art, but of all rhythm is the key. I do not say it is the most important of the essentials, hut I do say, it is the one thing which must be present to complete the appeal. Art is emotion, and emotion is its effect.
