The Saturday afternoon walks had been continued, but had not proved so popular as last year, and it seemed that the men pre- ferred to watch football. They had given $750 ench to the Naval and Military, Hospital towards the cost of installing wireless in the hospi- tals and this had been greatly ap preciated by the men.
The "Cheero" had undoubtedly proved its popularity, said Mr. Pat- tenden, and the way the room was packed out every evening during the winter months fully justified its existence. He expressed the hope) that the Somerset Regiment and the Argyll and Sutherland Highland- ern would use the "Cheero" same as the Borderers had.

Explaining the case, Mr. Fitzroy said that on the evening of January 12, Li Chan was in his shop, the Ynt Po grocers' shop, No. 411, Chung Hing Street, Cheung Chuu, when someone came to the door and called out the name Chan Pak. Li Chan, who knew Chan Fak, asked what the visitor wanted and he re- plied that he desired to obtain cer- tain things.

While the scuffle was going on the second accused also produced a revolver, but apparently he also only wish- ed to terrify.
Li Chan was thrown down but his shouts and the noise of the fight had attracted the attention of people living on the floor above who blew police whistles.
The three men ran away.
Li Chan, who did not appear to be any the worse, got on his feet and gave chase, being joined by others. One of the men dis. appeared but the other two were seen to wade out, waist deep, to a junk. They clambered on board and sailed away, fouling some rocks a short distance out but eventually getting clenr of them. The junk had one must "and a white suil,
The police were notified and Inspector Hopkins and a party of å forry police commandeered launch and set out to find the junk which, by that time had dis- appeared.
Eventually, a junk with one mast and nwhite anil was sighted. Several shots were fired... across the bow and, after some delay the junk hove to. As the launch went alongside the men on board were seen to throw articles overbaard, including clothing.
The four accused were found on the junk and as soon as it had been boarded, Li Chan, who was with the party, immediately identified the first and second accused as having entered his shop.
Letter Inference.
The junk was lowed back to Cheung Chau and searched. On board was found a letter written by Li Chan to Chan Pak telling him he was able to provide a cer- tain amount of money for bailing a man out. In was a significant fact, in view of that letter, that when, the men entered the shop they demanded money and not goods.
Replying to his Lordship, coun sel said that no arms were found. At the time of this attack the men were dressed in dark clothing and some coats were found on board which were wet at the bottom edges, which bore out the story of the men wading to the boat. The trousers accused were wear- ing, when discovered, were dryk
Mr. Fitzroy added that when the junk was overhauled the weather was fairly calm. The moon was out but there was a mist benging over the water.
The official translation of the letter was not in his hands, but ho would get, it and could call the translator as a wifebas.
The case is proceeding..
