All speculation regarding the successor to, Sir Cecil Clementi as Governor of Hongkong is set at rest to-day by an official announcement, cabled from London by Reuter, intimat- ing the filling of the post. The appointment falls to
Sir William Peel, K.B.E., C.M.G., Chief Secretary to the Government of the Federated Malay States. The selection of Sir William Peel is somewhat surprising, in the sense that, amongst the many "possibles" mentioned, his name has not occurred. As yet, no intimation is given of the likely date on which he will arrive in Hongkong.
Sir William Peel, who is just six months older than Sir Cecil Clementi, is a Cadet officer and has had a very varied career in the Straits Settlements and the F.M.S. He has held his present post since 1926. He is married, and has two sons. A point of interest is that Sir William Peel has had experience of the municipal form of Government, having been President both of the Singapore and the Penang Municipal Commissioners.
