STOLEN MONEY.

A remarkable story of how a Chinese foki succeeded in obtala- ing $7,500 by means of false pre- tences and of the manner in which he spent it-in riotous living in the Shanghai was revealed at Central Magistracy yesterday, when Au Ying, alias Chan Yeung, was sentenced by Mr. A. W. G. H. Grantham, to terms of six months, and two periods of three months' imprisonment, the sentences to run consecutively.

He was charged with obtaining the sum of $7,500 on August 8 by false pretences, after pur- porting that he was authorised by the Wing Foon firm to

the same, and further charged with the possession of a forged chop, which he purported to be that of the same firm. A third charge

Accused, who, it was statod. had been an employee of the firm but had been dismissed at the time of the offence, pleaded guilty to all the charges, and in the evidence the following details were disclosed.

In the first place, the prosGCU- on tors, the Wing Foon firm received

a cable from the Man Yick årm of Manila, asking them to collect the sum of $7,500 from their aventa. the Chaen Wo firm, in payment of goods. In addition, they cabled their agents to collect the $7,500 from the Industrial and Commercial Bank for pay- ment to the Wing Foon firm, and also to obtain another $7,500 for other payments later.

These instructions, the Chaen Wo.firm carried out, and then, about 5 p.m. on August 6, the defendant presented himself at their offices, stated he was foki of the Wing Foon firm and that he had been told to collect $7,500 from them,
