Roland Bateman, the ex-Guard- | man aged 22, and James Moore, 22, a soldier, appeared together at Murtbourgh-street Police Court on August 29, on charges in can nexion with the alleged attack on Mr. Philip Eaton, an American, in a flat in Half Moon-street, May- fair, on the night of August 12.

Bateman, whose address is Mour Top Ackworth, Pontefract, is charged with wounding Philip Eaton by striking him on the face and head with intent to murder him, and with assaulting Eaton and robbing him of £12 in notos and of goods valued at £42.

Moore, who is charged with. stealing and receiving various ar ticles · from the flat, was Further charged with assisting Bateman to evade arrest, with be- ing an accessory after the fact. of the alleged attempted murder, and with robbery with violence.

Divisional Detective Inspector Bradley stated that when he and Detective-Sergeant Thomas examin- ed Mr. Enton's rooms on the morn ing of August 13 the principal bed-room was in a state of disor- der. Bed-clothes, furniture, walls and carpet were spattered with blood. The room appeared to have been ransacked.

He produced pieces of a heavy chair.

The bed, the officer continued, appeared to have been slept in be- fore a struggle.

Dr. James Vickers Broad, house surgeon, at St. George's Hospital, said that when Mr. Eaton was ad- mitted on August 13 he was auf- fering from severe injury and surgical shock, with wounds to the face and head." The wounds were temporarily dressed, and he was put to bed, as he was in a dan- gerous condition.

Detailed examination

showed

that Mr. Eaton had five wounds, one being on the right temple and an inch and a half long. A second cut extended from the right eye down to the tip of the nose. Another on the upper lip went through to the mouth.

After his examination, Mr. Enton was taken to the operating theatre and many stitches were in- serted in the wounds.

Neither of the prisoners asked questions, und both were remand- ed until September 5.

When a charge of loitering for the purpose of betting, brought against Alfred, George Ellis, an omnibus "driver, of Mortlake, was dismissed at Mortlake. Police Court it was stated that two police of ficers disguised as omnibus drivers kept observation on a London Gen- eral Omnibus Company's garage.

Ellis stated that he knew the men were police" officers, because they were wearing 'busmen's winter coats, and 'did not have a white covering over their hats,

One of the police officers stated that he saw Ellis receive slips and money from several men, but, when he was searched, no slips were found;

Ellis stated that he was waiting for some of his friends to receive money he had lent them. One of them put a note in his hand asking him if he would change-duty for one day.

The Chairman, stating that there was not enough evidence on which to convict, said the police were justified in their action.
