The accident happened at about 11.45, the British cruiser having lost the British naval buoy opposite the Shanghai Club shortly after 11.80 am. on her way to Nanking with Admiral Waistell, Commander of the China Squadron, on board. The vessel was salling in the waters opposite the Bund with the ship's band playing and had reached a point just about, where the waters of the Soochow Creek enter the Whangpoo when a small nativa cargo hoat attempted to cross in front of her bows from the Pootung side. The cruiser struck the small vessel cutting it in half and throwing the two Chinese into the water.
