GUARD DISMISSED. CONSIGNEES": NOTICES. CONSIGNEES' NOTICE.
FRIENDS TAKE UP CUDGELS
ON HIS BEHALF.
Two Indians taking up the cudgels on behalf of a friend who had lost his position of a ship's guard on board the s.a. Kwangtung, on Sunday night carried out an assault on tho man who they thought was respon sible for his dismissal.
The upshot of this was that there appeared before Mr. N. L. Smith at the Central Magistracy yesterday afternoon, caso in which she two Indians in question wore summoned for gassult.
For the defence, Mr. Horaco Lo said his client were under the fm pression that their friend had been diamianed from the ship through a great injustice. They had thought that the complainant, whose report to the officern "of the ship had led to
the dismissal, was to blame.
Mr. Lo suggested that the best course was to bind hla ellents'over,
His Worship, acquiesced in the men- sure, and bound both men over in a sum of $50 to keep the pance.
The proceedings did not last mora than a few minutes, to the obvious disappointment of a large number of Indians who had assembled.

Peking, May 21.
A report from Mr. C. He found near Chingning that thirty five brigands were killed and parts of their bodies eaten by ravenous people. Mr. Andrew collected statements from the gentry who had witnessed this and other enses. Mr. Andrew Bates that some parts of the populace are starving because they have no money to buy what little food exists, whereas in other places no amount of money will purchase food because none exists.
