Much interest will be aroused by an announcement made to-day that Major H.O.D. Segrave, the famous racing motorist, will make his off. elai attempt to recapture the world's land-speed record for Great Bri- tain at Daytona Beach on March 6th, that is, Wednesday next week.

It is disclosed in British Wire less message received this morning that Major Segrave took, his great Napier angined car The Golden Arrow out for a trial spin yester day, and it is significant that he at- tained a speed of 180 miles an hour on his first test on three-quarter throttle.

In the ordinary course of events, a car engine has always been cool ed either directly by air or through water cooled in a radiator: but to obtain these colossal speeds an ordinary radiator offers tremendous wind resistance. -

£

The "Golden Arrow" has beautifully stream-lined body, only two feet wide, and to place, a radi- ator anywhere on this of sufficient alze to cool the engine would pro- bably reduce the speed of the ear quite appreciably.

Crushed Ice,

Captain Irving decided there- fore that an entirely new method of keeping the engine cool was necessary. Accordingly, "The Goldon Arrow" has B small radiator Wldden in the stream- lining of the body, and an lee box filled with crushed ice behind the engine.
