In answer to the Coroner, witness, said that the last time he saw the ship was at 4.40 a.m. when it was atili ainting and was then well down.
The Coroner: Have you anyone here who actually saw her go down? Witness: There is one in Hong- kong by the name of Maher, an as- sistant.

The steep part was to the south and west of Table Rock.

At about 5 o'clock witness made out another message reporting the sinking. He started tapping out that message through up to 5.22 .m., when he got through. In that interval, witness thought that ho must have made at least six at tempts or more. A copy of that telegram appeared in witness's re- gister.
He again, went to the landing stago to see if there were boate about, and saw nothing. At 6.27 a.m. when the Commodore's office rang up and asked for particulars, of the steamer in distress, witness gave them the previous messages and at 6.45. a.m; the Taikon tug put In an appearance. It was then just daybreak.
Witness replied that, as a rule, China Merchants ships used the western entrance as their wharf was down that way.
Examined by Mr. Watson, witness said that to make for the western untrance from Waglan, ships had to Dass the spot of the wreck before getting Into Shing Shee Moon Channel, which, north of Waglan, was about three miles wide, but narrowed down to one mile after Lam Tong Point, or Tam Too Head, was passed.

The Coroner said that he asked that question because of having seen a report in one of the local newspapers to the effect that the Spochew observed the Hein Wah's lights at 4 am, by which time, of course, she was aground.
Witness: According to my ob servations alio came in later, after the Haining.
The Coroner: That statement made in the newspaper made it necessary that information should be called on the point.
Matter of Time: Inspector Ogg, In charge of the proceedings, was directed by his Worship to investigate further in- to the matter of times. A calcula
lon was to be made of the distance between Waglan and the contre of the harbour, which was stated to be roughly 14 miles, with the view to determining the time when the Soochow was seen at each end.
Hia Worship: That statement In the newspapers has made it necessary that information should be called. It seems to be a most wicked and misleading report that another vessel, socing, the Hain Wah in her plight, should render no assistance.
Hia Worship also intimated that before very long he would also re- quire the evidence of the officer on watch on the Haining as she came
A Normal Course, Examined by the jury, witness agreed that the course taken by the Hsin Wah was normal for ships going into the Shing Shee Moon Channel' if due allowance was made for the north end of Waglan. If the Hain Wah had continued with out altering her course, she would have passed out of danger, although hugging too closely to the Island, in that morning, but she did not. She' 'suddenly Mr. Hast, resuming his evidence, showed her starboard light, which said that on sighting the Haining meant that she had altered her he did not inform her of the wreck, course bows on to the northern end thinking that she would have been of the Island.
Informed already, as his report was sent through by four o'clock and circulated by the proper au- thorities. He assumed that, news of the sinking, had already been broadcasted to incoming ships.
As soon as she turned round she atruck. Witness had thought that she would have passed safely on having plenty of room in which to clear the rock, consequently he was not prepared for this sudden turn- ingrat the last minute, as it were.. He had no time to make any sound signal, or any other signal for that matter
The tug signalled to Waglan by means of Horse lamp, "Whore, is the ship ashore?" Witness said he tried to give the tug a message by "Làm not so much surprised that the Morse lamp, but evidently she this accident has happened, the could not take the message in. The way so many of these ships did, in tug-steamed on past the north of passing the point," declared witness Waglan and then returned, by which Ho bad-even asen' an Empress time there was enough light to give boat pass the point, although not her flag signals. Reports to Green Igland. Mr. G. Taylor, Inspector of Lighthouses, living on Green Island said that at about 4 o'clock on the morning of the 16th, he received a report by telephone from Mr. Hast at Wagian, who informed him that a vessel had struck ■'rock off the north end of Waglan and was in
