MARINE RACING.
London to Cowes Race.
The annual long-distance race for cruising vessels, famous as the London to Cowes Race, always creates In motor boat circles in Great Britain a large amount of in- terest, and it not, ipfrequently happens that the journey imposes on the vessels particpating therein ja pretty severe test of their ability to weather conditions calling for the expanditure of the maximum hardihood on the part of both |boats and crows.
The race this year, took place on June 80th and, was won by "Toar mina," a Thornycroft, 40-foot cabin cruiser, which incidentally, was the only boat to complete the course, all the others starters giving up through stress of weather.
The prospects, before the start were such that only six bonta competed, and although the race, from a competitive standpoint, proved almost a fiasco it, was, in effect, a moat convincing demons- tration of the spaworthiness of the winning cuiser, and of the supremo reliability of her two 25-h.p.
Thornycroft four-cylinder type marino engines embodying tho well-known Thornycroft reducing- reversing gear.
They stood the gruelling tost of 180 miles without faltoring in epito of the gale conditions which pro- vailed throughout and which were at one time so severe that it took ten and a half hours to travel 86 miles. A word of tributo is due to the perseverance and pluck of the crew who peralsted in naviga- ting the boat for upwards of twenty-seven hours to reach their destination when all their com petitors had made for harbour.
The winning boat le one of Thornycroft's "Standard. Class" craft, of which they have a wide range for.pleasure or commercial service, built to standard' designa which enable them to be supplied at extremely favourable prices.

Plans for a double-decked steel Every winter the state of New and concrete highway between Al-York has a battle keeping its roads Outstanding features of the dis-lantic City and Philadephia are re-open. To keep inter-city and inter- tributor of the new Ford Model Aported under way. It is estimated state traffic moving, it must keep the cost of constructing such a 15,000 miles of highway clear of Simplicity; efficiency: ассев- sibility; adjustability; ruggedness; road will run around $50,000,000 snow.

freedom from short circuit trouble; excellent arrangement and design,
Located atop the engine, the dia- tributor makes contact with the spark plugs by means of short cop- per connectors.
This arrangement eliminates the possibility of short circuits, since: The connectors cannot touch elec- trodo and motor at the same time. If a connector loses contact at the plug. (a very remote possibility),{ the contact will be broken at thes electrodo also. If a connector loses contact at the electrode, its loose end will be held out of reach of the other connectors by the spring quality of its construction.
The design makes it possible to eliminate high-tension cables, with their heavy Insulation, deterfork- tlon, and shortcircuit troubles.*
The casing of the Model A dis tributor is stout and well-machined, and contains a protected anglo into which the condenser fits snugly,
The distributor head is of a new material called Fordenalte, Into which the electrodes are molded. The result is a short-circuit-proof. waterproof head,
The distributor cam of the Model A is adjustable, and In, combination with the removable cap of the die tribuor head reduces to a minimum the difficulties of timing.ht
In contrast with the stamped- metal construction of many dis- tributors, the breaker-plate of the Model A distributor is formed of a steel forging, plated with cadmiuń to insure permanent freedom from rust. When the spark is advanced or retarded, only the plate moves.
Besides being made adjustable, the cam of the Model A distributor!' is heat-treated, hardened, ground;"}] and polished, to reduce wear on the breaker-arm-block to a minimum, This was formerly limited to high- priced cars.
...The camshaft runs in two bronze graphito-lined bushings,ph
Adjustment of breaker-points can be made with a minimum:- of trouble, since the stationary point Is in serow form and can be adjust- ed by turning,
