SELF EXPERIMENT WITH BACILLUS

MISS K.M.G. DAVIES. --Miss K. M; G. Mary Davics, the youngest daughter, of Sir R. H. Davica, formerly Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, India, has died at Cannes.

She ranked with the heroes of yellow fever and malarin because Just as they injected themselves With those diseases, no she, as a nurse working at the American Hospital, Neulily, Paris, in 1915, deliberately Injected herself with the bacillus responsible for produc- ing gos gangrene..

At the time she was working as a bacteriologist ander Dr. Taylor, whose duty it was to investigate the cause of gas gangrene, which was resulting in numerous deaths and ampulations. Doctor Taylor was experinienting with guinea pigs, but was unable to obtain re sults which would allow him to apply his conclusion to human belage.

PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECT.

All investigators of the effects of tobacco smoking are convinced that the, paychologic side is most im- portant in estimating its offects.

The story is told of a physician who found it simply impossible to. be without his elgar. One day he took long drive to the country and on the way home, practically frozen, lighted a cigar. Ho at once began to feel more comfortable.

He continued the drive of 70 miles, smoking the same cigar, and found on his arrival only ope half inch of the cigar had burned, and that he had derived complate satisfaction from witnessing the clouds arising from his broath.

Smoke Clouds Havo. Effect. Whether or not the story is true, the fact remains that all ob servers, are convinced that the flame of the cigar, smoke rings, the feel of the cigar and its handling play a part in the pleas- ure and in the affects of the use of tobacco.

Sir Armstrong-Jones emphasizes particularly the soothing and com- panionable effects of the cloud of smoke, the circular shape of the rings, their gradual ascent, their changing forms and their pictures- que movements which tend to affect the Imagination.

"Last Experiments." The crucial experiment of in- ocillating a human being, with a puro culture of the bacillus was necessary, and this appeared to be impossible. Mias Davies, who had studied bacteriology at the Pasteur hustitute, had seen about 205 fatal cases of gangrene, and had soen gulmen pigs die, but also recover, under Doctor Taylor's experiments.
