Some rather anxious letters on the subject of left-handedness have appeared recently in Londen nowapier correspondence umre, so I take--the opportunity. of exp'wing what tle there is to explain on this interesting and Hittle known question, writes medical correspondent.

First let me say a word to allay any anxiety which there may be among those who find that some of their children have been thus singled out by Nature.

Left-handedness is a peculiari- ty; It is not a degeneracy; and, so far from being a handicap, it may on the whole be legitimately re garded as an advantage. It would be a great asset in angore to bej really ambidextrous.

There is no such thing as true ambidexterity, but the left-handed child has a better chance in that: direction than the normal right- handed. The left-handed is taught to use his right hand in writing and in other ways, whereas the normal child is never taught to use his left hand.

SHAM WEDDING AND TAX HOAX.

ALSATIAN STORY WITHOUT A MORAL.

MASK AS 'PHONE.

A youth named Paul Ancel has emulated the notorious "Captain Koepenick" in playing an extra- ordinary trick on a peasant living on a lonely farm in the blue Alsa- tian mountains, near Colmar,

The farmer has the reputation of being rich. 1p his household is his a woman who has passed as wife for 30 years, but to whom he has never been married.

Hiring a taxicab at Colmar, Paul Ancel drove to the farm and intro- duced himself as the secretary of.. tho Prefect of the department.

"You are probably aware," he said, "that the French Govern- ment has introduced a heavy tax fon all couples who live as husband and wife,

"I have been sent by the Prefect to make an estimate of your for- tune and collect the tax."

The peasants nearly collapsed when, after much calculation, the young "official" announced that they had to pay him a tax of 4,000

francs.

"And you had better pay it on the spot if you do not want the gendarmes to come and fetch you to-morrow," he declared.

BOMB CLUE TO SECRET STILLS.

JABS OF WHISKY CRASH FROM WINDOWS.

POLICE BAFFLED,

It is to-day accepted as proved that the explosion in an Italian tenement at New York (when child and a man three women,

were killed, and 11 other people Injured) may be deânitely as sociated with the men who, last July, during the Sacco-Vanzetti agitation, attempted to blow up two underground stations.

In the wreckage was found an uhexploded bomb exactly like one which had failed to go off at the time of the underground outrages.

Each bomb contained 6lb. of dynamite; but the detonating caps had not acted.

Police activity is now directed to the hunt for two young men who recently rented a room where the explosion originated.

One theory is that the bomb, which wrecked the Italian tenement, may have been accidentally de- tonated by one of the wanted young men,

Perhaps it was the man whose unidentifiable body has been found among the debria,

Whether the suspects used their apartment as an infernal machine factory or only a store room can- not now be decided.

Crime. Gives Clue to Crime,

One curious result of the ex- plesion is claimed as demonstra- tion of the futility of trying to en- force the Prohibition Law,

It was at first thought the ex- plosion was caused by materials used in some illicit whisky still, and the police began a house-to- house search all down the street, which is largely peopled by Italian.

News of the activitles of the When ollicials preceeded them. they arrived on the scene of their search-ruids they found the back- yards of nearly all the tenemente reeking with alcohol and piled up with the debris of stills and stone- ware pars, which had been thrown out of the back windows from every floor, so that no evidence of ownership is possible.

In some of the places searched, however, the policemen brought to light many gallons of spirits and wine and hundreds of bottles.
