-One remark thrown out by one of the pirates was to the effect that had the piracy yielded as much as was anticipated by the lander of the gang the kidnapping would not have been necessary.

The cargo consisted of drugs and salt fish. The whole of the former was taken as loot by the pirates but they ignored the salt fish. What booty they received. from the passengers is not known, but it is established that they did not merely content themselves i with robbing passengers of their money and jewellery. Clothing

was also taken and anything else of the slightest value upon which the pirates could lay their hands.

· CAPTAIN'S REPORT. Fifty Armed Men Board.

The report of Captain Morgan dated September 2, states:-I have to report that the s.s. Ko Chow left Sam Shui yesterday at 4.30 pm. for Mickow. At 7 p.m. the Chief Officer, (Mr. E. T. Evans) and roy- self had sat down to dinner, when some considerable commotion was noticed outside. Almost simultane- ously I heard a shot and at the same moment two men appeared at the door of the mess room in a very excited and menacing man- ner. The Chief Officer and myself were hustled out of the mess room away 'aft, down to the main deck, where the passengers were being driven.

A little later I noticed that the ship was being turned round.·.·

At about 9 p.m. the ship stapped and anchored. Several junks and sampans came alongside and about 50 more men, (mostly armed) came on board and the ship was thoroughly looted.

About 12 men comprised the first attack.

The looting continued until 2.30 a.m. By this time the last of the pirates had left, having threatened the pilot if he did not take the ship to Hongkong....
