After experimenting for, two Fears, the Minerva Motor Co., of Belgium, has perfected a radically different type of engine for cars.
Instead of puppets or sleeves, it has one large rotary valve which makes only one revolution for every six turns of the crankshaft. The new engine is known as the Minerva-Bournonville,

The Mark of Quality
Mounted in a boring on the head of the cylinders, the new engine has a rotary valve with three pockets, for each cylinder.
The cylindrical portion masks the cylinder top on compression, while the pockets give communien- tion to inlet and exhaust ports. To overcome the tendency of the valve to life at each explosion an ingenious shoe and spring con- trolled wedge cap it and prevent play in the tunnel in which it rotates.
Easily Adjustable.
Simple adjustments make it possible to determine, externally, whether there is any "jump" in the valve, and to correct the pressure. Any desired timing is possible and any openings are obtainable.
The rotary valve shaft is driven from an intermedinte shaft, which is rotated by a pinion on the chankshaft, so that a double reduc tion in gearing slows down the valve's rotation to one to six of the crankshaft. At 4,000 revolu tions the valve is turning at approximately only 6,666 r.p.m..
Accessibility is
unusual -feature. Entire mechanism can be withdrawn at the rear-end of the cylinder block by merely re moving five nuts, and disconnect- ing an oil line.
en
Lubrication is assured by a dis- tributor driven off the valve shaft, which sends a drop of oil to four points at every 25 revolutions of the valve, and another, at the same periods, of the intake manifold: Grooves on the wedges distribute the oil to the surfaces between the faces of valve and shoe.
Two types of engines have been built. A four with a bore and stroke of 80 x 120 mm. develop-. ing 60 hp. at 4,000 r.p.m., and a six of 65 x 100 m.m. which develops 35 h.p. at 3,000 r.p.m
OVER THE SLEEPERS.
Motor transport is triumphing over trams and trains in many countries, but carg can really claim to be "putting it over" in England.
There, four miles of double track were built by a railway com- pany same time ago, and never used, Now, arrangements are being made to lease the track, cover it with concrete, and use it as a speedway and for club speed trials.
Banks on each side, will act as grandstands.
USING RECLAIMED RUBBER.
Many of the tyres and tubes now produced in U.S.A. contain a per centage of reclaimed rubber, as along with the 360,000 long tons of crude rubber used in that country fast year, 164,000 long tons of reclaimed was consumed.
This is evidence of America's attempt to cut imports of crude rubber as a means of combating the fixed prices placed by British. rubber growers under the Steven- Bon plan.
