the low-gear band is properly ad- justed, it will not slip on its drum, except at the instant of engage- ment and there will be very alight wear incurred. The situation in regard to the brake band is entirely different, as it slips on its drum al the time it is applied and naturally wears fast. There is no wear of a band so long as it grips its drum positively and without slippage, as is the case with the low and reverse- bands.
THE TAR FIEND.
This is one of the times of the year when the tar fiend gets up on his hind legs and asserts himself. All through the spring he has been threatening us. Menacing-looking barrels have lain on the roadside, like the cylinders of gas which made our lives a burden in the trenches ten years ago evil things with de- struction hidden in their tummles, striking terror into our hearts by their very inactivity. Close by them heaps of chippings appeared mysteriously and lay there, week after week, grinning at us as we passed, as much as to say, "You wait, my Ind. I'll get you one of these fine days."
them
At first we looked upon with apprehension and shuddered. Then familiarity bred contempt.
The first essential of a successful attack, the textbooks tell us, is the element of surprise, so the tar fend held his hand until a feeling of false security had grown up; then he struck. Sinister looking men appeared with hideous, smoking, brooms, ladies, shovels and other instruments of torture. They oc- cupied the whole road, going about their nefarious work with an air of contemptuous leleure. They blot ted out the landscape with their foul smoke. They flooded the road with oceans of slimy blackness.. They scattered shovelfuls of sharp' chippings to puncture our balloons and jump up at us with their coat- ings of liquid filth. The paint- work of our cara is now ruined. Our clothes, our faces and our very hair are smudged and sticky with tar, and it is impossible to use the starting handle or change a wheel without getting smothered in the beastly stuff.
Yet we are exhorted by our own organisations not to kill the mis- creants who have caused us all this misary. The exhortation seems to me unreasonable, but I suppose I must obey, What I want to know, though, is this: Would I be locked upon with disfavour by the powers that be if I rolled some of them in their own disgusting mess, and afterwards sprinkled them with a liberal dose of feathers? It is, I believe, an ancient custom, and one which might well be revived in the interests of poetic justice-Ex.
