SPEED FIEND.

CAR TURNS CORNER ON TWO WHEELS.

Careering along the streets of West Point at an excessive speed. and in a manner dangerous to the public, the driver of a public motor car appeared before. Mr. Major C. Willson at the Contral Magistracy оп Saturday on charges of reckless driving and disobeying the signals of a Police officer.

The case for the prosecution, na gathered from the evidence of Police witnesses, was that the defendant was seen to turn into Belchers Street at a speed of 20 miles per hour. The car going so fast that, according to Sergeant Basting, the two outside, wheels were actually off the ground on taking the corper.

Was

A signal was given "for the defendant to stop, but the "order was disobeyed, and by the time the sergeant turned his cycle round to give chase the motor car was out of sight. By travelling at } a speed of 40 miles per hour the officer came upon the car in Sand Street, zig-zagging across the road in a manner which was dangerous to the public.

In the meantime the car had passed a combination in which were Inspector Grant and Ser- geant Clark. The driver of the car was again called upon to pull up, but the shout was ignored.

Serveant Clark went by way of the Praya to intercept the car, while Sergeant Basting continued the chase to Kennedy Town.. In Forbes Strect, the car was aban- doned at the back of the Slaughter House and all the occupants, four or five Chinese, ran towards Cadogan Street,

The party was followed and the defendant was arrested. The Police witnesses were positive that the defendant was the man at the wheel.

Mr. D. McCallum, who appear- ed for the defence, produced three witnesses to prove that the de- fendant was not in charge of the car but was merely a passenger. convicted the His Worship accused and imposed a fine of $25 on the charge of "reckless driving and a further fine of $10 on the second count.
