GOVERNMENT POLICY: Supported by Liberal Candidate.
London, Mar. 16.
The Liberal candidate in the North Southwark by-election Mr. E. A. Strauss, supports the Govern- ment policy in China,
Ite says that the chief interrup- ters at his meetings are people who shout "British aims in China are to muke slaves of the Chinese,"to" which Mr. Strauss retorts The British people in China are ware- elerks and other housemen, workers who are selling goods manufactured in this country. If we refuse to protect their lives the whole trade will be lost and thou- sands of British men and women will be thrown out of work."- Reuter.
"PREPOSTEROUS CHARGE." A Ry-Election Argument.
London, March 16: The Chinese situation is being made an issue in the triangular by-election in Leith, consequent upon Capt. W. Wedgwood Benn turning from Liberal to Labour and submitting himself for re- election. The Labour candidate, Mr. R. E. Wilson, issued a manifesto declaring that British troops were now in China to enable. the capi- talists to exploit Chinese resources. The Unionist (Mr. Allen Benton) has replied vigorously, charac- terising the suggestion that the British Government was trying to get political control of China ng a "deliberate and calculated lie."- Renter.
