They wore out of luck, however, for on pasaing a launch, the dinghy turned-turtlen in the back wash. Four of the men were rescued, and on their Identification being established, they were handed over to the police

FISHERMAN'S LOSS.

SEARCHED-IN DARK LANE AT, NIGHT.

That he was stopped and search-* ed on March 10 at three o'clock in the 'morning by a person wear- ing a uniform, was the atatement made by a Chinese fisherman. to Major C. Willson at the Magis-.

a Chinese tracy yesterday, when constable was charged with the larceny of a $100 note..

The fisherman stated that he was proceeding to the market to buy small fish and fishing lines; and on the way, he was stopped by a Chinese constable and searched. He had on him at that time $104, which was made up of one $100 note and four single dollar bills.

After the search, the constable is alleged to have replaced only the dollar bills, taking away with him the $100 nota. The fisher- after met another Chinese constable, and after ex-

plaining his plight, was told to proceed to the No. 7 Police Station to make a report. When he had finished making his report at the station, a number of Chinese con- stables came in, and complainant recognised one of them as the man who had relloved him of the $100 note.

Mr. P. P. J.. Wodehouse ex- plained that there were, besides the police, revenue and steamer Benchers who might possibly havä searched the complainant. It was a peculiar coincidence, however, that witness should have pointed out a man, whose beat covered the locality where the man was searched.

Mr. L. Turner, for the defence pointed out that the fisherman when making the report was in au agitated state of mind and seeing that the loss of $100 meant a great deal to him, he naturally, would point out someone, amongst the Chinesa constables. as the man who stole his money. There was very little evidence, besides the word of the complainant himself to convict the constable.

His Worship remarked that there were grave doubts in the CABO and discharged the des fendant.

with the exception of the woman and a small boy on each side, were ordared to sign a personal bond of $50 to keep the peace for one year,
