WHAT HAPPENED AT HANGCHOW.

TERRIBLE SCENES.

Describing scenes of wholesale murder of Northern, soldiers, and civilians suspected of being Northernors, the looting of shops and homes, the retreat of the Northern troops from Hankow and the triumphant entry of the Cantonese soldiers into the city, a Fresbyterian missionary now in Shanghai, in an interview with the representative of The Shang- hai Sunday Times, draws a graphic word pleture of Hangchow during the days when it was occupied by retreating Northern soldiers, and the first few days of occupation by the victorious Cantonese troops.

Retreat of Sun's Army.

""On Wednesday, February 16, the Northern troops began to come Into Hangehow. They had with them. About 800 Kiangsi men, for- merly constituting nu independent division which had been captured by Chang Kai-shek.

"Many of these men, who are really Northerners, wore three uniforms, including first the uni form of their independent division, then the Southern uniform and lastly the Northern uniform. They had been drafted into Mar- shal Sun's army and were well armed.

"On Thursday morning we noted the 13th. and 8th. Divisions, of about 8,000 men each, going past. The 8th. ha been doing some) Bghting, but the other division had not.

"The 8th. Northern division got to the station and found no loco- motives or railway crews. There was about 60 cars there, but no engines to pull thom. The division imilately began marching down the track, leaving about 30 men behind. These 30 men began sell- ing rice, dour and other supplies, constituting a part of their loot. Subsequently the two divisiona reached the city and camped thera that night and did a little looting.

Looting Begins.

"The following morning the soldiers went to the Chamber of Commerce and demanded money. The officials, knowing that the Southern troops would soon reach the city, stalled for time, putting off the demands with the explana- tion that money had been give i to General Mong, and that the soldiers should get their share from him.
