country, is lighter and cheaper THE HONGKONG AUTOMOBILE than the average small car of Europe, yet is faster, more power- ful and more economical.

This was a two-passenger car, the open typo weighing 750 pounds, and the olosdd car weigh- ing 1,000 pounds. In comparison, the Ford roadster weighs 1,655 pounds.

"The motor developed 13 horse- power, Sergurdi explains, "and the speed of the car was about 50 miles an hour. The consumption of gasoline was from 50 to 54 miles per gallon. The wheelbase was 76 inches and the tread 46 inches.

than any car at any price and, in "This car had more leg room

regard to riding comfort, it woul equal if not surpass any car on the market."

Yet the car is waiting produc- tion in this country.

SİXES WILL FORCE CHARGE.

The reason for this, brought out by Sergardi and' others, is the suitability of the Ford, the Chev rolet, the Whippet and others of the same class for the present.

"Thero may come some big change regarding the number of cylinders," Sergardi remarks. "If ono of the larger companies, now making the low-priced cars, gote to the six cylinders or more, then the four cylinders will be doomed to disappear from the America market.

"There are some possibilities of introducing in this country a two- passenger car of small power and wheelbase, to be sold at a cost much bolow the present lowest priced car. To do this it requires a big production, which only a big corporation could afford to under- take.

But a big company generally has many irons in the firo, and as the investment to produce such a car will be quite considerable, the probabilities are that this small car will not materializo in the near future."

ROADS AND TYRE LIFE.

We all know that English roads are among the beat in the world. Taking them as a whole, we. should say that they are the best. Certainly no European roads equal them, but some of the Amorican roads run them fairly close. I doubt whether we ap- prociate what a great saving good roade effect in tyros, to say nothing of petrol and mainton- anco. We can only guess at these two last points; no statistics are available to show what the saving on petrol and maintenance roally is. But here are some in- torosting figuros compiled by a woll-known Amorican firm of tyre makers. If we take 100 as the tyro life in Grout Britain, this figuro has to be reduced to 80 for the same car running in Gormany; for Belgium, Holland and Switzerland it is 75 for France it drops to 60; on Spanish roads the milonge is cut in half; in Italy it diminishes to 45; while in the Balkans 30 is the average figure. Comparisons with the United States aro. dif- ficult, but in the Eastern States, where good roads exist, the mite- aga is estimated to be the same as Groat Britain.
