THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER

POPPY DAY.

THE ASSISTANCE OF

EX-SERVICEMEN, 9/

There has been the usual con- troversy at Home and abroad as to the proper method of observing Armistice Day about which there will always be conflicting opinions, There can, however, only be ope opinion as to the desirability of contributing to the Poppy Day Fund, but it is, neverthe- less, Interesting to know how the funds raised by Lord Haig's appeal are disbursed. The allocation of the amounts subscribed is in the hands of the British Legion Bene- volent Committee; which sits under the personal chairmanship of the Field-Marshal, who has presided over every meeting of this Com- mittee.

In every instance the work undertaken by the British Legion, is designed to assist ex-service men' and women, either collectivaly or individually, in the solution of those problems with which they are confronted as the result of their war service. Not only does the Legion relieve distress amongst ex-Service men of all ranks, their dependants, and the widows and children of the fallen, but it alds them in establishing their cla!ms to pensions, finds them employment, advances money, free of intéreat. to set them up in business, faci- Jitate emigration, gives them free legal and other advice in respect of housing, employment, and kind- red matters, and (to quote Lord Haig's own words) assists general- ly to preserve brave deserving men from calamity, to encourage and comfort them in their tem porary adversity, so that they can Implant in their children the true British grit, which in the greatest crisis of its history, saved our they rendor"Empire from misery and ruin."

The provision and maintenance of these vital servicen obviously requires a considerable staff, and A small percentage of the money raised through the. Appeal Fand is allocated by the: Benevolent Com- mittee to the British Legion's Gen eral Funda for Headquarters and Area administration, full parti culars of which are contained in the Annual Report of the British Levlon, a copy of which la available to anyone interested,

The arrangements for the sale of Popples and the collection of funds! locally are made by a small sub committee and, needless.. perhaps, to say, there are pratically no ad ministrative charges. There are alware a sufficient number of charming and public spirited ladies prepared to sell Poppies on the 11th of November, and it is really wonderful how readily help. la forthcoming from all classes where required. The support obtained' is by no means confined to any one section of the community, as the Portuguese and Chinese are not only generous in their contriby- tinns but actively assist in the or genisation eo as to ensure the buc cess of the Committee's efforts

Earl Haig's message to the local branch of the British. Legion in- dicates that he appreciates the very trying time we have had, but Hong, kong will, it is hoped, prove that with its back to the wall, it can still, render great assistance to one of the Empire's most deserving

causes.
