GAMBLE WITH THE PROCEEDS.
Some amusing details were dis- closed in a case heard by Major C. Willson this morning, in which two boys were charged with steal- ing a topec from a schoolboy.
It was stated that yesterday. whilst watching some men fishing from the seawall, the schoolboy. was jostled by the defendants, who thereupon represented themselves as being the injured parties. They wanted compensation, and, failing to get any money from the boy, kept his topee as a pledge. They had followed, the schoolboy as far as his home, when, sensing danger, they turned on their heels. and bolted, still retaining the hat.:
The Magistrate convicted one of the defendants and ordered him to receive ten strokes with the birch The other was discharged.
