SHANGHAI BEATEN AT TIENTSIN.

With the interport series 'having n disastrous end for Shanghai, there was still sparkling tennis to be watched to-

day, says a Tientsin correspon- dent of the N. C. Delly News, writing on the 3rd inslant.

To start the afternoon Kuwa- bura took on the second singles player of the Waseda team, Kawa- jiri.. The Shanghai player lost in Avo sets, 7-6, 10-8, 2-6, after a strenuous hard hitting game. Kewajiri used a splendid repertoire of strokes, but everything came pack with a lot of space. Kawn Jiri strikes one as a better doubles player us his favourite chop stroke off the ground is not very effective.. At the net, however, he is a differ- ent man and his hard smashing and elever placements were deciding factors, Kuwaderi-ext ed rounds of applause for several Ilghtning drives which passed his volleying opponent down the side lines. The first set went to Wase- da after a ding dong struggle in which Kawajiri always had the advantage.

The second set sux kawajiri not taking the net so often and with Kuwabara leading nt 8-7 it looked like one set all The Waseda man sprung, a prise though and his lightning tactics prevailing at the net won him the next two games. The last game and set was taken to love on

REDEEMING THE NEW YORK FOLLIES.

Mr. Florenz Ziegfeld, director of the world-famous New York, Follies, has this week says a Now York writer, made a declaration that has resounded over the theatrical world of two continents. WHEN NO ONE WILL DIE.

VISION OF A GOLDEN' AGE,

A golden age is approaching when men and women will be im- mortal, according to Dr. Will Dur- ant, an-American doctor of philo--| sophy.

He foresees the normal span of life gradually being lengthened, as man probes deeper into the secrets of science, and believes that in a hundred years from now centenarians will be quite coin-

mon.

"Man may some day overcome death," he states. "The age when men will cease to die may have its inconveniences, but there is nothing either in science or philo- sophy inconsistent with the iden of the eventual immortality of the body,

"Death is a scheme of Nature for making room for the young. I suppose that if man conquera death he will by that time cease to grow old and retain the vigour of youth."

It has been the custom for some years past to scorn the scholar and laud the athlete, but a census of men who in their, time at American universities were studi- ous rather than athletic, shows

to, that scholarship ́es a means good health and ultimate longevity has been misjudged. The book- worm may, be the frst of the im mortals.
