A GENEROUS HOST.
MEAL THAT WAS NOT FAID FOR
After having partaken of a sumptuous meal to which he had. Invited a large number of friends.
Chinese rattan worker, was un- able to settle the bill and in order. to get satisfaction for the food supplied the propriotor called in the Police, who arrested the host. The party had proviously Hired motor cars and spent some als hours touring the Territories...
At the Kowloon Magistracy yes-. terday afternoon the host was charged before Mr. J. H. B. Nihill with defrauding the proprietors of the restaurant and the garage.,
The evidence showed that the defendant Invited a number of friends to go for a joy ride in the New Territories on the afternoon of July 25. Two cars were ordered -by-two members of the party on
the instructions of the defendant' and after being out for the entire afternoon, the defendant signed an T. O. U. for over $60 for the two
cary,
The celebrations were' continued in the night at the Tung Shing Restaurant, where the party assem. bled for dinner. At the conclu- sion of the meal a bill for $40 was given to the defendant, who had previously given the proprietor. the impression that he was a wealthy citizen. The defendunt stated that he-and no money' on his person and after some argument the Police were sent for.
In his statement the defendant admitted that he still owed the restaurant people the money for the dinner, bat denied that he was responsible for the hiring of the cars. He was a guest at the first part of the celebrations, but was the host at the dinner.
His Worship said that he would drop the second charge and con- victed the defendant on the charge of defrauding the restaurant. Taking into consideration that the defendant had been in gnol since July 25, his Worship passed sen- tence of three months' hard labour.
ROTTUES OF. POSTUMIA.
DEVELOPMENT BY FASCIST GOVERNMENT.
Rome, June 30-When the Fas cist Government arranged to make Postumia the centre of tourist traffic for the Carso Tridentino, It scarcely uxpected a return of one million lire in one year. "I bel orrido" of this underground world of grottoes, abysses, disap- pearing rivers, hidden valleys and abandoned riverberis in Dantesque landscape is the fashion and promises to become the rage. It certainly is one of the goals of a honeymoon.
The traveller can choose be- tween a train ut ten and an ex press at midday for his journey of Bome score of miles, and very shortly he will be able to leave the imprisoned caverns on board a steamer; he can hire a mackin- tosh at the door from a thoughtful Government; he can listen to a Verdi concert or dance in "the Elysian Fiolds" in company with 10,000 other people without a crust. The entranced pilgrim of the underworld passes through shadows and eerie, rock-cut pas- enges to plunge into the artificial light and, natural colour of the grottoes; stalactites and stalag- mites, clusters of crystals, thin wedges of limestone and contort- éd wedges of ebony-coloured rock compete in fantasy, forming weird and often beautiful occular, delu- sions. "The Cathedral," "The Crucifix" "Paradise," "The Blue Grotto," are all well-named.
The work of repairing this sub- terranean world, once "the price of Austria, and the opening up of a group of new grottoes has been ably done, and if the au- thorities carry out the project of linking up isolated groups of caverns by, means of many more winding galleries and of opening up certain hidden, tracta of the river Pluca, the most remarkable enterprise of the tourist world' will have been achieved. Only this year was the cavernous abyss. of this strange river explored and an mense underground valley was discovered, and the workmen. heard the rour of plunging waters. The Piuca is joined, by another underground river, the Planina and both form lakes in circular caverna....
There is also talk of using one of the grottoes as a prehistoric museum to illustrate the struggle between primitive man and beast. A record will also be kept of the days when the people of Friull, flying from the barbarian and Turkish invasions, took refuge in, the yawning black cavern, which opens in the middle of the forest.
