HELD FOR RANSOM.

SEQUEL TO KWONG CHING

ARMS CASE,

On allegations of complicity in an arms deal, three boatmen, ac- cording to the Police, took the law into their own hands and-detain- ed, 'pending the payment of the sum of $250 ransom monoy, the muster of a junk, but owing to in formation being given to the Po- lice by the victim's niece, the men's plans were interrupted with the result that they stood before the Kowloon Magistrate yesterday afternoon on charges of holding, Wong Yce for ransom.

Inspector Pincott prosecuted an behalf of the Police and Mr. A. J. O'Donoghue appeared for the de- fendants.

Outlining his case, Inspector Pincott said that on the morning of May 27, the three defendants. wont on board the complainant's junk in the Yaumati breakwater and demanded the payment of $260 as they had discovered he had been implicated in the recent Kwong Ching arms

advised to go with them, to A bank. The com- plainant was then taken to No. 31 Portland Street, and at about 3 p.m. the fox returned having fail. ed to get any money.

The following day, he was re- moved to No. 38 and was left there Fin charge of a woman. That night information was brought to the house that the three men had been arrested and the complainant was released:

The man made no report but his iniece gave information of the oc

currence to the Police, and the three men were subsequently ar rested.

The complainant was then call- ed and he bore out; Inspector Pin- cott's opening.

Insufficient Evidence.

Mr. O'Donoghue submitted that there was no evidence of the man being held under restraint anr had he been taken from his junk under any compulsion.

His Worship said that it was more of a case of blackmail, the man being afraid that the other meg would give him away. He, however, requested Mr. O'Donog hue to cross examine the witnesse

In cross examination witness said he was threatened that if he did not pay the money he would be given in charge, and the men also mentioned that a reward had' been offered by the cruiser, Kwong Ching, for his arrest.

Mr. O'Donoghue: Did you have anything to do with this transac- tion?

Witness: None.

Did you ever hear of a boat call- ed the Kwong Ching? Yes.

His Worship: Is that the famous cruiser?!

Inspector "Pincott: Yes, your Worship..

After further cross examination his Worship asked Inspector Pin- eatt if the Police or the cruiser had offered any reward in connec- tion with the larceny of the arms. Inspector Pincott replied that there was no Police reward but he could not say whether the crui- ser had offered any or not. The Boat was at present at sea. "

His Worship: Not gone to sea 'has she?

Inspector Pincott: Yes, your Worship. She has gone to Fukien to take part in a battle..

At the conclusion of Mr. O'Donoghue's cross examination, his Worship found that there was

no case and the defendants were

all discharged.
