MISSIONARIES CURSED TO

THEIR FACES.

Kuéilin, March 15.-"Others had trials of cruel mockings and scourg inga, yen moreover of bonds and Imprisonments."

This brief description of the trials through which the early Church passed in Apostolic days has just been repeated in cruel vividness during the past few "days in an inland City where several of our missionaries are located, says a N. C. D. News correspondent.

The unrest and agitation in China which has been sweeping through the land with relentless force has in recent months turned against the Christian Church, and missionaries and Chinese Christians alike have been called to suffer,

Insults by Studenta.

On March 12 the students in Kueilin, a large educational centre, met to commemorate the anniver- sary, of the death of Dr. Sun Yat- zen. About one thousand students paraded the city carrylag banners and streamers on which were writ- ten Bolshevistic slogans of a re-i volutionary nature. After parad- ing the city the crowd marched into the Baptist Mission Compound. Here the parading students cried out, "Down with Imperialism destroy the Christian Church." The Christian girls were called by name, saying that they were the dogs of the foreigners and some were even pelted with stones. That missionaries were cursed to their: faces, but remembering "when He ||was reviled He reviled not again,”

they patiently bore the insult.

Chinese Christian's Ordeal.

The Chinese Christian in ques tion; however, seems to have been less patient, and he was set on by the mob mab struck him with their

the latter cutting an ugly gosh from which the blood spurted pro- fusely. The man was then bound with ropes and with blood stream- ing down his face was led off to the City square where he was tied

to a post amid the hoots and jeers of the frenzied throng. Mean- while, the authorities had been notified of what was happening, and urged to rescue the unfortun- ate captive, but they were either powerless or afraid to interfere. After hours of insult and suffering gradually the mocking crowd began to disperse, and when the throng had grown smaller soldiers came and rescued the prisoner. The man was taken to the yamen where he was kept all night.

The crowd considered this was interfering with their rights, and soon the rable again assembled, and going to the yamen demanded the prisoner to be handed back to them. This demand was" complied with, and the unfortunate victim with swollen face and hair dishevelled was once more given over to the mob.

Treated as a Criminal.

He was again bound, and with This accusation written on paper and fastened to his back he was led through the streets by the howlingi mob like a criminal being led to xecution. As he was hustled along the streets his tormentors called cut to the people en route, "Come see the way we treat the Christians, and the way ere long we will deal with the others."

When because of fatigue he lag- ged in his galt he was kicked and pounded and made to walki faster. He was again taken to tho city square where he was once tied to the dreaded post. Strings of fire-crackers were then secured? and set off at his feet, while the sparks flew in his haggard face and
