The Atlantic has now been erossed four times by acroplane, and thrice by airship. The United States airman, Lieutenant Commander Read, was the first to accomplish the feat by aeroplane. Two Portuguese airmen stopping en! route at Las Palmas, St. Vincent, and St. Paul's Rock, where, the original machine was destroyed, reached. their destination #1 Pernambucc in another 'machine.
The only direct non-slop trans- Atlantic aeroplane flight was made by the late Sir John Alcock and Sir Arthur Whitten Brown. who flew from Newfoundland to Ireland in 1919.
Each of the airship flights, two by the British R33 and one by the American airmen flying a German machine, wern made without stopping en route.
