If the valve is operated at a bend in its characteristic curve by giving the grid a negative bias
from a four-volt flesh lamp battery-it is found that an increase of, say; ono volt pin tho grid potential will produce quite a large increase in the anode current, while a decrease of one valt only results in A small decrease in the anode or plate current.
If excessive bins is employed the result will be distortion and loss of signal strength, so a vari- able grid-biasa, topped four to eight volt dry cell-is to be re- commended.
The best raethod is to connecta topped dry battery in the grid ciroult between the filament and the grid.
The filment battery is connect- ed so that the "minus" (-) goes- to earth (or grid) and the grid battery is placed in series with the L.Tnegative filament socket of the valve and to the earth terminal of the set.
SHORT CUTS. Things to Know in a Receiver.
To insure good contact at the crystal fasten or solder a brush made of steel wool to the end of the oatwhisker. The catwhisker oven may be replaced by a finish- ing nail to which has been faston- ed the steel wool brush.
Ramore the paper covering from an old dry call, fasten the re- ceiver's ground wire to the nega tive and positivo terminals and bury it in the ground. As it re- mains moist it will make a good ground for a year.
If the aerial lead-in must be suspended over the roof eaVOS, drop it through an ordinary por- celain lead-in insulator that has been secured in a hole bored in a stick fastened to the edge of the roof.
As earphones must be handled carefully why not put a small scrow eye or book on the side of the radio table so you can hang up the phones when through with them for the night?
