DOOK RUMOURS. There appears in the issue of June 8th, a leading article on the circulation of rumours in Hong kong that the Hongkong, and Whampoa Dock Co. were to build a new and larger dock at Kowloon This report is discounted, and it is recalled that Sir Paul Chater had declared at a meeting of tho Company that the question of lengthening the No. 1 dock had been found unnecessary, as it had baen discovered that the propellor shafts of the Siberia and Korea, the biggest boats vleiting the port, [could be withdrawn on board and

the steamers thus accommodated..

The article goes on to doubt whether bigger vessels would likely be employed in the Far East, and states that there is no foundation for reports of exten- sions at the Kowloon Docks,

At the annual meeting of the China Light and Power Co., Ltd... held on June 9th, Mr. C. A Tomes, presiding, stated that there was an zative demand in Canton for current, whilst almost. all the foreign residents on Shameen, were customers of the Company. He added that the rovonue from Kowloon was slow- ly increasing, but there could

doubt 19 to the future importance and develop- ment of the peninsula.-Sir Paul Chater, Dr. J. W. Noble and Mr. H. P. P. White wore re-elasted to the Consulting Committee.

be

In the issue of the 10th June- appears a report that a site had been secured on Honam Island for the Canton Christian College, and that the purpose of the institution was to take part in the intellectual and moral revival in South China.

THE Y, M. O A Considerable space is devoted in the issue of June 11th to tho opaning of the now European Y. M. C. A rooms in Alexandra Buildings. The speakers included the Rev. W. J. Southam and the Hon. Mr. Gershom Stewart. The former outlined the proposed. activities of the Association, saying it would encourage swim- ming, tennis, cycling and football; whilst classes would also be held for the tonobing of French, Gorman and Chiness; in addition to which there would be a liter ary society, a debating olub and a camera club.
