ROMAN FORTRESS

Another Interesting Discovery.

The North of England Exoava- tion. Committee has made an intorosting discovery at Haddon, on-the-Wall on the North Tyno, in the form of fragments of an early fortress gate, which consist of parts of the eastorn and wastorn gates of a Roman camp on the Roman wall. There has just boon excavated the central pliar of the groat onst gateway (standing 5ft. in height), the re mains of the foot of the western gato contra! pillar, and a small part of the northern half of the groat west gateway.

All the stonowork is in wonderful state of proservation, particularly the huge pillar of the great vast gateway, which is a gigantic block of masoniy.. In regard to the eastern portion of the dicoveries, it is assumed that all the existing portions of the sill have been found, as it is more or loss obvious that the reminder has been used for the purpose of building oleowhere.

A romarkable feature if the romains of the wort galo pillar is that two pivot holes are cloarly visible by moans of which the great double doora |were attached. Thus to this pillar would be attached the innermost halves of the inward and outward

The doors, which were twofold. Kreat cast gato pillar, which is intact, is an oxcellent example af Roman masonry, showing spendid joints and rustic carving. It is difficult to state the date. of the building of what has now boon discovered, as the gateways, appear to have boon added lator than the original design.

STONEHENGE BURIALS.

Decision to Prohibit Practice.

The First Commissioner of) Works has dooided that-per- trission cannot be given to the Latter Day Druids to bury the asbus of thi ir members within tho precincts of Stonehenge. He has in imated this decision to Lard Crawford, who protested against the proposal in a letter published | in the Times of Angust 28, and

any burials bo pormitted within Starting the provincls of Stonehenge in Sunday the future."

Matines

The matter was first raised inj the form of a question put to tho First Commissioner of Works la the flouse of Commons at the end of July, and Mr. Jowett thou stated that he did not propaso to raise any objection to the burial pro- of ashes at Stonehenge,

"no serious! vided there was disturbanco of the ground." There have been no formul coin- munications between Mr. Jowett and the Latter-Day Druids, and, therefore, neither his original decision nor tho present final one has boon sent to them dire ot.

Though it has been stated on behalf of the Druids that the proposed ceremonies would in- volva "nothing in the nature of an interment in the ground," it is! ovident that the decision of the First Commissioner of Works amounts to an absolute rofusal of the permission they have sought.
