Mr. William Poel recently gave two performances at Oxford of an Elizabethan play call "Fratricide Punished, or Hamlet Prince of Denmark."
This play has a curious history." There has always boon s good doal of interest in the early v9T* sion of the play "Hamlet" from which Shakespeare, took the in- ? cidents of his own master-pless, but no copy of it is known. The present play, "Fratricido Punish- od." is a version of the earlier "Hamlet" that Engla companies of players used to use when touring on the Contin- ent. It was preserved, in German at Dresden (which an English company is known to have visited just about the time Shakespeare's "Hamlet" was produced in Lon- don), and Mr. Pool's play is a ̈ transcript of the German version. Nearly all the characters. ‘are the same in both plays.
