AN EQUINE HERO REWARDED. These two pictures show the changes wrought by time in the life of a racing pony.
The pony is "Spring Rose," foriterly one of the best known ponles on the China Coast, and winner of the Hongkong Derby in 1907, and the photograph shows how he looked at that time. The jockey is Mr. Chi Ling, and. In the other picture the same pony and jockey are shown as they are to-day, the picture having been taken only recently at Mr. Chi Ling's farm at Xiangwan, where "Spring Rose" has been an honoured pen- sioner since 1910.
NEW JAZZ İNSTRUMENT. -Here is another new one for the. Jazz orchestraa: Ils Inventor, Senor Miguel Jehan, Spanish, musician- and Instrument maker, calls it the midgetmelba. "It is made from a patrof bellows and the string is connected with the needle and diaphragm of a phono- graph. This gives the notes a singing charactor.
AN INGENIOUS FLOUR GRINDER.-Much ingenuity slamps this grinding mill in a flour mill at Yutaoho, Shans. The mill is composed of two circullar stones, the upper stone being stationary by being led to a team of wood which butts, against the side of the build- Ing, and the nether stone revolves on a vertical wooden shalt driven by a waterwheel under the floor. The ropas hanging from the raller are thero to hold the stones apart. By moving the wooden cleats through which the ropes pass the angle can be charged to give very slight vorli cal movement in order to regulate gap by as slight as one-hundredih of
an inch.

PASSING OF A FAMILIAR ROAD SIGN —The big B.AIT 'Clock, that has told the time, cor rectly to Shanghal residents of the Western District for the past couple of years is being taken dövn. The ́sign was first put up about fifteen years ago, and originally shoved, a Chinaman smoking a cigareite, with
smicko rings that appeared-and-disappeared in a manner fascinating to the beholder straight-from-the- country and come to see the sights of Shanghai, – The clock was outlined with coloured lamps that flashed in miternating series of red and yellow. it is to be stored for some time but will no doubt find a new home where its usefulness as a good Ilma-keeper and an advertising medium will be once more appreciated. :
