Fine Rolls and Inquisitions showed that in the Thirteenth" Century the hands of widows were regularly sold. In 1250 Oliver Dynant gave £100 for the marriage of Isabel, widow of John de Courtenay. In the following year Arnold Murdok gave £200 for that of Lucy, widow of John de Grey. Many widows, however. gave large sums for the right of free choice, but those who married without licet paid, or their husbands did considerable fines. For example, William de Byfold. paid £500 for having married the widow of Henry de Erdington, and in 1282 Clarice de Whaddon, a widow, suffered confiscation of her lands for a like offence.

The safe of the marriage of heirs was мого common than that of widows: In 1254 an In- quisition reported, that the marriage of Joan de Bethum. aged 76 years, was worth £30 only, for she is sick of a worth which consumes her." The Church
