CRICKET.

This Season's League, The annual meeting of the Hong: koog Cricket League was held last evening at the Hongkong Cricket Club Pavilion. Mr. G. R. Safer presided, and with him were MF. H. Owen Hughes, acting Hon. Secretary and Treasurer, afd the representatives of ten clubs.

The minutes of last meeting hav. ing been read and confirmed, the -anaual report and accounts were

adopted.

The report stated: There were ten entries to the First Division which was

wog by. the University, the other Clubs in order of merit being-Hongkong C.C.-Indian R.G. C.C., "Civil Service C.C., Kuwloon C.C., R.G.A., Navy, Craigengower C.0, Chinese R.C., Infantry (scratcbed!

In the Second Division, the Indian R.C. were the winners, the other entrants being-University. Royal Engineers, Police R.C.. Civil. Service G.C. and Kowloon C.C.

The Accounts show a balance of 247.60 to the credit of the Fengite.

Election of Offic rs.

Sir Cloud Severn was re-elected President of the Langue, with Mr. G. R Sayer as Vice-President. Mr. Owen Hughes was elected Hou. Secretary and Treasurer.

The following teams were enter ed for the competition this year.

It Wat decided that ono match be played in the first division and two in the second, and fixtures were arranged, blauk dates being left for two interesting matches proposed.-E, K. C. C.S The Rest on 10th and 12th. November: last. Interport team v. The Rest on Dec. 29 and Jan. 1.

DAMAGED MAIL.

The Fresident Grant's Fire.

The mail received by the Puet Office from the's.s. President Grant comprised 395 begs only out of the 481 bag, advieed on the way bills, the shortage of 80 including 37 bags for Hongkong and nine for Canton. It is expected, however, that a number of the missing bags will be received on the return of the ship 'rom Manila.

The letter mails, were all inteet; but the newspaper, elc., and parcel mails, were in most cases so badly: damaged by fire and water au to make their contents worthless.

HONGKONG PROPERTY MARKET.

London, August 31.-It is announced in Hongkong that the pro- "perty of Messrs. Jardine, Matheson and Company, also the manager's. residence at East Point have been sold to a Chineso syndicate for the sum of four million dollars.

If the foregoing news is correct this is the largest individual property deal hitherto negotiated in Hongkong, but it is understood that the East Point property has been on the market for some time, but just how much of it is included in the transaction above referred to it is difficult to say. The property is a very extensive one, com prising besides a large number of Chinese tenements, the hill on- which stands the stately, home of the Jardine taipans one of the oldest European residences existing in the colony. ̧

BRITISH YACHTING.

London, August 31. Great Britain retains the Seawanbaka yachting cup a result of the Glasgow yacht races, Colls was third securing three victories out of four races on the Clyde with the American challenger Lea Both boats are six metre sailers.

In Toronto Leander defeated. Philadelphia at the Undine. Row- log Club in the final international eights, the chief rowing event of the Canadian National Exhibition. The course was one mile and an eighth. Leander won by a length in five minutes and fifty-six seconds.

DUSSELDORFF MONEYLESS.

Cologne, Aug. 31.

A financial crisis prévails in Dusseldorff in consequence of the unprecedented seizure 1,800 milliard marks, whch had been specially printed to pay week-end wages, replacing the previous seizures. The money was confiscated as it left the printing works. As a result the town is comparatively moneyless and most of the banks and shops are closed down,

JAPANESE STEAMER AFIRE...

London, Aug. 31.

The Japanese steamer Alps Maru is afire in number five hold oft- Gravesend. Steam was injected for twenty hours into the hold and she was also flooded betweendecks. So far tho fire has not been extinguished. Two tugs are standing by. There was an explosion when the after hatch was removed, injuring a number of the crew.

BOXER INDEMNITY.

London, Aug. 31

The Daily Telegraph's diplomatic correspondent says that a sari- ous Franco-Chinese controversy is progressing over France's insis tence that the Boxer indemnity be paid in gold france and act in paper. In the event of refusal France threatens not to ratify the Washington Treaty authorising China' to raise her customs dues.
