Paris, August 16. The much quieter tone of the press comments is in consequener of an announcement that a detailed reply to the British note will shortly be issued. The papers dwell on the necessity of preserving the Entents and now express appreciation of the Eritish desire for an agreement. They declare that the small difference between the sum asked by the British and what is due to them under the Spa gercentage should facilitate an understanding.

SITUATION IN GERMANY.
Berlin, Aug. 16.
A Quartette composed of Gungers Lelliott, Harris, Steel and Green, was greatly appreciated.
Mrs Southern beautifully gowned sang three songs very sweetly. Mrs. Carter's songs were also very well received.
A great part of the success of the concert is due to the excellent ac- companying of Lieut. Southern, who carried the whole thing through splendidly. His two piano; solos were also finely given.
Others, who contributed songs to-
